Keeping silver bright without scratching it

Silver does not rust; it tarnishes, and tarnish is a surface film, not damage. Keeping a piece bright is two habits: removing that film gently, and slowing its return. Both are easier than they sound.

Where the dark comes from

Tarnish is silver reacting with the small amount of sulfur that ordinary air carries; sweat, wool, rubber bands and some papers speed it up. Sterling at 925 shows it a little sooner because of the copper in the alloy. None of it means the piece is wearing out. A bangle can darken and be brought back for decades.

The cloth beats the dip

A silver polishing cloth is charged with a fine compound and lifts the film while barely touching the metal underneath. Liquid dips work by dissolving the surface and do not know when to stop: they strip the deliberate dark out of recesses and leave a raw, too-white finish. Keep a cloth in the drawer and leave the dip at the store.

Storage does half the work

Air causes tarnish, so less air means less tarnish. One piece per small zip bag, with the air pressed out, parks a bangle for months. Pieces stored touching each other scratch each other, which is the second reason for one bag each. A strip of anti-tarnish paper in the box pulls sulfur out of the air before the silver can.

Take it off for the pool

Chlorinated water, hot springs and perfume are the fast lanes to a dark or spotted surface. The morning order is old and simple: silver goes on last, after lotion and scent have dried, and comes off first. If a piece does end up in the sea, rinse it in plain water and dry it with a soft cloth the same day.

Let the recesses stay dark

On stamped and patterned pieces, the darkness sitting deep in the pattern is doing design work: it is what makes the relief read. Polish the high surfaces, leave the valleys alone, and the piece keeps the depth the bench gave it. Bright where light lands is the goal, not bright everywhere.
